How to Create More Time In Your Life, Every Day.

Updated: Oct 3, 2024

Do you feel like you struggle with not having enough time in your day to day life?

It could be true but we are also all guilty of using time as an excuse to not get things done, when in fact we have a whole lot of time available to us every week.

Man with clock time management

In fact, you have 10,800 minutes in a week available to you to get stuff done.

Let’s say you sleep 8 hours a night and you work 40 hours per week, you still have 72 hours left, that’s a whopping 4320 minutes per week!

Maybe you work 50 hours a week - that's still 62 hours per week.

Maybe you think you work more? Research by Laura Vanderkam in her book “168 hours - You have more time than you think” showed that those people who said they worked 75 hours per week actually over estimated by 25 hours - you know which way right?

So you have time.

Time to work, time to focus on actions and time to achieve your goals.

It’s all about how you choose to use your time.

Think about it, you have a problem at home maybe the boiler breaks down, you have to call up a plumber, you have to deal with the mess, you have to be in for the boiler man, you have to tidy up the mess, you have to search the internet to find the plumber. This may take 5 - 6 hours. Time you say you don’t have. But realistically you do, because

Time is highly elastic.

And how you spend your time is a choice.

Bad choices have consequences, but time is a choice we can choose to manage well and create more time for what we want to do.

4 Steps to effectively creating more time in your life.

Follow these three steps below and you will be able to create more time in your day.

  1. The first step is to identify your Time Stealers. Those actions, people and tasks that eat up your time. Make a list and then consider how you can change your behaviour to reduce the time stealers in your life.

  2. Maybe you can delegate more ( Read my Guide to Mastering Delegation to help with this) Stop doing everything yourself and ask others in your team, business or family to help.

  3. Next it's to let go of some of the myths that surround effective managing time. Thinking you can just multi task to save time or that making list after list will speed things up. ( Read by Top 6 Myths of Time Management to discover what they are) These are all counterproductive to creating space and extra time in your day so swap this behaviour for more productive options.

  4. Try a new time management model. There are plenty out there to review  - check out my round up of the best models in the post Best Ways To Manage Your Time Effectively  to see which one might work for you and give it a try.

If you take these 3 steps you will be well on your way to using your time more effectively and creating extra time in your day.
